    True beauty

Staying true to the building's characteristics, we found true beauty its imperfection, combined with clear shapes and honest materials. This embodies UMA's belief: "True beauty. You won’t find it on a screen. Or in a magazine. Or on a shelf. No. You have to look inside. True beauty is what’s true about you. It’s not perfect, it’s beautiful. Not everyone will see it. Not everyone will like it. But it’s beautiful. Because it’s you. And you’re the only you there is."

    Home to the creatives

With connection at heart & mind, thought-leading advertising agency Ace recently opened its doors to their team, their clients, their colleagues and their new neighborhood.
The newly built building in Amsterdam’s harbor area (the Houthavens) hosts 11 different advertising-related agencies that are combined into one super-agency; Ace.
The foundation of Ace is bringing different people together on creative challenges for brands; people from different backgrounds and with different areas of expertise. Because when people get together, the true magic happens; cross-pollination of great ideas and visions. Ace’s new office perfectly translates their Club-philosophy where work and social gathering seamlessly blend by inviting employees and clients to meet each other in areas of interest beyond work. An enticing, inspiring and flexible place to be that complements working from home.

    About the space
The ground floor is fully designed to make things happen - ‘create waves’ - and make a positive impact on society. Anything should be possible. You may attend a lecture, have drinks at the bar, hang out, present your work, meet new people, put products on show, feel energized and inspired, throw a party from time to time, attend workshops, withdraw with only you and your laptop or have any kind of meetings. A hyper-versatile floor that meets your needs, whatever your mood.

    About the design
Key-words to help designing and defining Ace’s space are ‘authentic’, ‘bold’, ‘cultured’ and ‘energizing’.
Except for adding a huge void to allow for the central staircase, the architecture was left untouched and the interior was added to the building as a separate layer.
TANK chose a toned down color palette, combined with authentic materials like timber and hemp. The bright red staircase at the core of the space is the bold statement that emphasizes connection and opinion.
The use of biophilic design resulted in abstracted islands with surrounding paths that could be interpreted as water and walls with hemp finishing that refer to layers of sludge.
Upon entrance, a clear path guides you through two XL-timber seating islands, following its way under the eye-catching staircase, straight to the round, concrete bar. To easily make your way and feel at ease, all shapes are either rounded or have rounded corners.
But it’s not all nature and zen that spin the space, funky and cheeky interventions are all around:
The reading table is adjustable like a scissor lift so it can either be a table for weekly meetings, a product display-area or even become a catwalk.
The round conversation pit allows for closed off meetings and can be transformed into a central stage
The giganormeous chandelier over the bar is the obvious gathering point
The chef’s table serves to have lunch but works as a meeting table or workshop-bar too.
Other than that, of course functional single-use spaces are available as well. A sound studio, a prayer room, a pump room, meeting rooms, a wardrobe and gender neutral toilets support Ace’s unique event space at ground level.

    One-bedroom hotel

With a great affinity for rare industrial buildings, we proudly took the opportunity to design the interior for single-suite hotel Von Dice.
Von Dice is built in an iconic concrete former sludge return puping station to purify water for the city of Amsterdam.

The unique, bunker-like building is 21 meters tall with a width varying from 2,8 to only 1,3 meters.
The interior contrasts the rough, ragged concrete building with it's soft yet bold identity.
Due to it’s shape the different rooms are connected by cast staircases that branch out from the bedroom.
Von Dice is designed with sustainability at heart:
    - Old steel grids serve as sun blinds to the glass roof
    - Layers of natural clay plaster cover the walls, and
    - Dutch oak is used for the timber finishings
The redevelopment of this purification station proofs a great love for ‘recycling’ and monumental heritage.

    Repurposing with a purpose!

    IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR

A’DAM&Co is a members club located on the 18th floor of the A’DAM Toren, a multifunctional tower in the north of Amsterdam. In 2016 the A’DAM Toren was created by Amsterdam’s brightest entrepreneurs. The tower hosts observation decks, cafes, start-ups, a 24-hour club, a music school for kids and a revolving restaurant. A’DAM&Co reflects the tower’s creative spirit by bringing together a community of change-makers with a passion for collaboration. The first of its kind in Amsterdam, the club invites all members to curate its program.

Our challenge was to create a place of contrasts; a private club that felt inclusive, warm and familiar yet exclusive, spectacular and prestigious. A place where each member felt special and part of a whole. The circular space offered a breathtaking 360-degree views, but also presented acoustic and zoning challenges. As a solution was we created a grand gesture that gathered members around the core and organically branched into more intimate places.

We took a cue from the tower’s name A’DAM, finding inspiration in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve gathered around the Tree of Life. A spectacular, abstracted tree shapes the heart of the experience and embraces all members around a grand oval bar. Designed as a freestanding table, the bar creates an informal atmosphere where everyone can mingle freely. The Instagram-worthy wooden tree branches out to define elegant nooks and lounges styled with a mix of antique and modern furniture. The organic framework keeps the space open, inclusive and cohesive, while hiding equipments and stimulating acoustics.

The material palette adds to the poetry of the space with a contrast of simple raw materials like plywood and refined hospitality textures, such as brass and copper. A cool, all-steel, cosmopolitan lobby sets the stage for the rich experience once you’re in.

ADAM&Co is winner of the Restaurant and Bar Design Award for the best European bar.

    SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

    Persijn Juniper&Kin, boardrooms & hotellobby

With the interior design of the QO Amsterdam, we want to prove that sustainable is beautiful. You don’t need to sacrifice comfort or aesthetic pleasure to contribute to a better world. At every step of the QO experience, we celebrate the brand’s ethos of sustainable luxury.

For us, sustainable luxury lives and evolves with its surroundings. It’s always in dialogue with nature and in tune with the senses. That’s why we chose to stage the austere building as the canvas for the experience and use the interior as a “jewel” that adorns it. The building’s authentic structure and materials take the spotlight, amplified by a natural and tactile interior palette. A round shape language and abundant natural light infuse the space with a sense of relaxation and well-being.

The hotel has a rooftop greenhouse for fresh ingredients in the QO kitchens. We re-interpreted this feature into a greenhouse-style framework that becomes a storytelling thread throughout the hotel. The lightweight structure visually links the different floors, defines zones without the use of heavy partitions and brings the daylight in.

Each floor and experience has its own nature-inspired colour scheme to set a distinct mood and intuitively guide the guest. Persijn, the Dutch eatery on the ground floor, features a palette of brown, green and ocher, reminiscent of grain fields. The mezzanine reception celebrates the sensorial opulence of Dutch flower fields. The meeting rooms on the first floor evoke Dutch waters with a cool palette of blues and greys. The rooftop bar Juniper & Kin immerses the guests in the intense tones of a starry night - a perfect pairing for the breathtaking view.

The layout of the space takes after an informal social room with many ways to meet and interact: from enjoying a drink at the bar to lounging on the sofas. The reception island, accessible from all sides, suggests an open and friendly welcome.

All these elements come together into a living, breathing space that syncs with the building and flow of the day, embodying the philosophy behind sustainable luxury.
