    True beauty

Staying true to the building's characteristics, we found true beauty its imperfection, combined with clear shapes and honest materials. This embodies UMA's belief: "True beauty. You won’t find it on a screen. Or in a magazine. Or on a shelf. No. You have to look inside. True beauty is what’s true about you. It’s not perfect, it’s beautiful. Not everyone will see it. Not everyone will like it. But it’s beautiful. Because it’s you. And you’re the only you there is."

    Ace

    Home to the creatives

With connection at heart & mind, thought-leading advertising agency Ace recently opened its doors to their team, their clients, their colleagues and their new neighborhood.
The newly built building in Amsterdam’s harbor area (the Houthavens) hosts 11 different advertising-related agencies that are combined into one super-agency; Ace.
The foundation of Ace is bringing different people together on creative challenges for brands; people from different backgrounds and with different areas of expertise. Because when people get together, the true magic happens; cross-pollination of great ideas and visions. Ace’s new office perfectly translates their Club-philosophy where work and social gathering seamlessly blend by inviting employees and clients to meet each other in areas of interest beyond work. An enticing, inspiring and flexible place to be that complements working from home.

    About the space
The ground floor is fully designed to make things happen - ‘create waves’ - and make a positive impact on society. Anything should be possible. You may attend a lecture, have drinks at the bar, hang out, present your work, meet new people, put products on show, feel energized and inspired, throw a party from time to time, attend workshops, withdraw with only you and your laptop or have any kind of meetings. A hyper-versatile floor that meets your needs, whatever your mood.

    About the design
Key-words to help designing and defining Ace’s space are ‘authentic’, ‘bold’, ‘cultured’ and ‘energizing’.
Except for adding a huge void to allow for the central staircase, the architecture was left untouched and the interior was added to the building as a separate layer.
TANK chose a toned down color palette, combined with authentic materials like timber and hemp. The bright red staircase at the core of the space is the bold statement that emphasizes connection and opinion.
The use of biophilic design resulted in abstracted islands with surrounding paths that could be interpreted as water and walls with hemp finishing that refer to layers of sludge.
Upon entrance, a clear path guides you through two XL-timber seating islands, following its way under the eye-catching staircase, straight to the round, concrete bar. To easily make your way and feel at ease, all shapes are either rounded or have rounded corners.
But it’s not all nature and zen that spin the space, funky and cheeky interventions are all around:
The reading table is adjustable like a scissor lift so it can either be a table for weekly meetings, a product display-area or even become a catwalk.
The round conversation pit allows for closed off meetings and can be transformed into a central stage
The giganormeous chandelier over the bar is the obvious gathering point
The chef’s table serves to have lunch but works as a meeting table or workshop-bar too.
Other than that, of course functional single-use spaces are available as well. A sound studio, a prayer room, a pump room, meeting rooms, a wardrobe and gender neutral toilets support Ace’s unique event space at ground level.

    KEEPING IT REAL

Adyen has opened its headquarters’ doors in the former Hudson’s Bay department store in Amsterdam, designed by Amsterdam-based interior design studio TANK. TANK designs offices that encourage encounter, involvement and cooperation. The interior design for Adyen reflects the company’s ambition of achieving every kind of connectivity: with each other, with the market, with the city and with the wider world.

    Core values and design
TANK has taken Adyen’s core values as the inspiration for its design: transparent, open, fast-moving, straightforward, connected to the rapidly changing world, focused on meaningful interaction and unafraid to follow its own path. These values translate into a design that offers a versatile, personal and professional interior with expertly planned, flexible and sustainable workplaces. To retain the existing ‘department-store feel’, all floors remain open to let in plenty of daylight and provide space for abundant natural greenery. Furniture with low contours maximizes the views and offers a sense of space, connecting inside with outside on every level.

    Connectivity is key
The office should invite people to relax and connect, as individuals and as teams. The interior design underlines this connectivity throughout the building in several ways. A shared staircase unites all floors, providing a social space for spontaneous encounters and phone calls. Communal areas on each floor provide places to meet, consult and collaborate, without disturbing colleagues engaged in more concentrated tasks. With an emphasis on togetherness, Adyen had decided to create a large, knock-out kitchen serving lunch for the whole team in a setting that offers stunning city views. The kitchen is flexible and can easily be converted into a workspace.

    Materials and sustainability
TANK loves to use the everyday in unexpected ways as a source of inspiration and recognition. For example, it has had the building’s former sanitary facilities and old roof tiles ground down and turned into unique bricks. These have been used to produce custom-made furniture pieces. The entire 17,000 m² office consists of only 20 interior elements that recur in alternating patterns

    One-bedroom hotel

With a great affinity for rare industrial buildings, we proudly took the opportunity to design the interior for single-suite hotel Von Dice.
Von Dice is built in an iconic concrete former sludge return puping station to purify water for the city of Amsterdam.

The unique, bunker-like building is 21 meters tall with a width varying from 2,8 to only 1,3 meters.
The interior contrasts the rough, ragged concrete building with it's soft yet bold identity.
Due to it’s shape the different rooms are connected by cast staircases that branch out from the bedroom.
Von Dice is designed with sustainability at heart:
    - Old steel grids serve as sun blinds to the glass roof
    - Layers of natural clay plaster cover the walls, and
    - Dutch oak is used for the timber finishings
The redevelopment of this purification station proofs a great love for ‘recycling’ and monumental heritage.

    IT'S A FAMILY AFFAIR

A’DAM&Co is a members club located on the 18th floor of the A’DAM Toren, a multifunctional tower in the north of Amsterdam. In 2016 the A’DAM Toren was created by Amsterdam’s brightest entrepreneurs. The tower hosts observation decks, cafes, start-ups, a 24-hour club, a music school for kids and a revolving restaurant. A’DAM&Co reflects the tower’s creative spirit by bringing together a community of change-makers with a passion for collaboration. The first of its kind in Amsterdam, the club invites all members to curate its program.

Our challenge was to create a place of contrasts; a private club that felt inclusive, warm and familiar yet exclusive, spectacular and prestigious. A place where each member felt special and part of a whole. The circular space offered a breathtaking 360-degree views, but also presented acoustic and zoning challenges. As a solution was we created a grand gesture that gathered members around the core and organically branched into more intimate places.

We took a cue from the tower’s name A’DAM, finding inspiration in the Garden of Eden, where Adam and Eve gathered around the Tree of Life. A spectacular, abstracted tree shapes the heart of the experience and embraces all members around a grand oval bar. Designed as a freestanding table, the bar creates an informal atmosphere where everyone can mingle freely. The Instagram-worthy wooden tree branches out to define elegant nooks and lounges styled with a mix of antique and modern furniture. The organic framework keeps the space open, inclusive and cohesive, while hiding equipments and stimulating acoustics.

The material palette adds to the poetry of the space with a contrast of simple raw materials like plywood and refined hospitality textures, such as brass and copper. A cool, all-steel, cosmopolitan lobby sets the stage for the rich experience once you’re in.

ADAM&Co is winner of the Restaurant and Bar Design Award for the best European bar.

    WELCOME TO THE FAMILY

Merging an energetic approach to traditional fitness with lifestyle and social interaction has worked out well for Dutch gym concept Vondelgym. The initial success of its hybridism focused offering — the first location in Amsterdam’s trendy West garnered over 3000 members — has spilled over into a growing brand with gyms across Amsterdam. It’s newest location is also its most premium, located in the heart of Amsterdam’s financial district ‘de Zuidas’. This third Vondelgym, designed by TANK, further develops the community-based blend of dynamic gym and social hub.

Together with four partners from both the hospitality and sports industries, Dutch TV and fitness personality Arie Boomsma founded Vondelgym with a focus on hybridism. The classes range from high-intensity training and kick-boxing to Pilates and yoga. Social interaction lies at the heart of the concept and the community aspect is suffused through all layers of the experience. The interior is shaped around the belief that large open spaces allow participants to ‘feel the energy of the other classes’ and that fitness forms part of a lifestyle. Clients put extra care and effort into their health and appearance and expect an equally cared for interior design in the spaces they frequent.

TANK has been involved with the brand and its founders from inception, designing the interiors for the various locations. The interior design concept amplifies the brand experience with a tongue in cheek, yet poetic aesthetic through implementing raw materials in unexpected ways. Repurposed wooden gym floors, gymnastic rings and a paired-down design, that highlights rather than hides installations, translate the concept of an old-school boxing gym to a contemporary urban hub. The blend of warm, hospitality atmosphere with a loft-like industrial urban feel, bypasses the hi-tech and sterile severity of traditional gyms.

The large open space calls for a creative demarcation between social and work-out areas: a graphical, crisp division of the spaces is produced by juxtaposing the warm tones of the social space with the cool, sober ones of the gym area. The open lay-out, brand identity and community concept also mean an aesthetic solution for noise management is needed. Concrete tiles and steel mesh absorb the noise and lessen the intensity of the loud environment.

The Zuidas location forms a bolder, more confident translation of the brand. The newest addition further develops the brand’s belief in a more integrated and community-based approach to fitness. It is the first Vondelgym in which the social space is (in part) accessible to non-members. It is also the first Vondelgym without chairs or benches, to encourage a more active stance in downtime as well.

The brand’s growth allows for a whimsical riff on the established visual brand language, as through the ring-formed lighting elements and an almost Centre Pompidou-like celebration of the vents and technical installations. In the bar area TANK has implemented the new ‘no seating’ philosophy through playful use of heavy wooden blocks that can be used for short-time sitting or, indeed, an impromptu work-out. Vondelgym Zuid presents a robust, growing brand that proves fitness is most meaningful when seen as part of a holistic whole.

De Hooch offers luxury apartments in the centre of Amsterdam, sold at the highest market price. This level of ambition required an innovative way of thinking - an interior that spoke to the versatile needs of high net worth individuals and grew more beautiful with time.

Our design moves away from opulence towards personalisation and low-key refinement. Tactile natural materials with a character are the soul of the space. They bring warmth, authenticity and a sense of wellness, while evolving over time with unique and surprising details. Tough textures, such as concrete, coexist with luxurious patinated brass, wood, marble and leather, creating multiple worlds within one space. The wooden shutters gently filter the light into an open and seemingly boundless apartment.

The entrance reveals a stately yet intimate living room that transitions into the study with glass pivot doors. Salvaged vintage floorboards are repurposed into a unique floor pattern to define the living room and kitchen. In contrast, the dining area features a rough concrete floor and a large black table, flanked by dramatically lit wine shelves and accessorised with TANK’s custom-designed TNK.01 chandelier.

The kitchen is the centrepiece of the residence, featuring a colossal marble island wedged between two columns. The back unit can be closed off for ventilation during cooking. The kitchen’s back-wall is made from glass bricks, transmitting the light and showcasing views onto the balcony.

All areas are open and versatile, inviting the residents to use different spaces for multiple needs.

    SUSTAINABLE LUXURY

    Persijn Juniper&Kin, boardrooms & hotellobby

With the interior design of the QO Amsterdam, we want to prove that sustainable is beautiful. You don’t need to sacrifice comfort or aesthetic pleasure to contribute to a better world. At every step of the QO experience, we celebrate the brand’s ethos of sustainable luxury.

For us, sustainable luxury lives and evolves with its surroundings. It’s always in dialogue with nature and in tune with the senses. That’s why we chose to stage the austere building as the canvas for the experience and use the interior as a “jewel” that adorns it. The building’s authentic structure and materials take the spotlight, amplified by a natural and tactile interior palette. A round shape language and abundant natural light infuse the space with a sense of relaxation and well-being.

The hotel has a rooftop greenhouse for fresh ingredients in the QO kitchens. We re-interpreted this feature into a greenhouse-style framework that becomes a storytelling thread throughout the hotel. The lightweight structure visually links the different floors, defines zones without the use of heavy partitions and brings the daylight in.

Each floor and experience has its own nature-inspired colour scheme to set a distinct mood and intuitively guide the guest. Persijn, the Dutch eatery on the ground floor, features a palette of brown, green and ocher, reminiscent of grain fields. The mezzanine reception celebrates the sensorial opulence of Dutch flower fields. The meeting rooms on the first floor evoke Dutch waters with a cool palette of blues and greys. The rooftop bar Juniper & Kin immerses the guests in the intense tones of a starry night - a perfect pairing for the breathtaking view.

The layout of the space takes after an informal social room with many ways to meet and interact: from enjoying a drink at the bar to lounging on the sofas. The reception island, accessible from all sides, suggests an open and friendly welcome.

All these elements come together into a living, breathing space that syncs with the building and flow of the day, embodying the philosophy behind sustainable luxury.

    PLEASURE IS THEIR BUSINESS

The Coolsingel cafe in De Bijenkorf Rotterdam welcomes visitors into the department store with a coffee and patisserie experience that will seduce any taste buds. Here, simple everyday pleasures are transformed into a true indulgence with a dash of understated opulence.

The cafe fuses retail and hospitality into one premium destination. Gourmet deluxe products are combined with a relaxing all-day spot to dwell. Upon entrance, visitors are greeted by “boxes of indulgence” that showcase the retail offer. Freestanding mid floor tables highlight key seasonal products and create a meandering landscape for discovery. A grid of wall cabinets puts the gourmet products and their luxurious packaging on the centre stage. We also designed a series of merchandising boxes to highlight and curate the products, catering to diverse sizes and types. The patisserie counter is the theatre of activity within this area, showcasing decadent cakes and pastries behind large glass vitrines that create a feast for the eyes.

Retail transitions into the cafe area with a varied seatingscape for different preferences. The patrons can watch the world go by at the window seating, linger at the cozy banquettes or enjoy a quick coffee at the tables in the middle. The all-day food bar is a destination at the back, offering hot bites, sandwiches, pastries and drinks. The retail cabinets continue into this area as a scenographic backdrop for the counter.

The cafe’s look & feel celebrates De Bijenkorf’s refined identity and the building’s architectural grandeur. Bold shapes and monolithic volumes are balanced with translucency, crafted details and a layering of dark and light materials. A series of mesh screenings, inspired by the brand’s iconic hive pattern, intuitively divide the space and curate in-store views from outside.

    GLOBETROTTERS HQ

David Lewis’ DJ’s and personnel are true globetrotters. The new David Lewis headquarters had to emanate that on-the-go nature. At the same time it had to offer a home-away-from-home to those who regularly, or occasionally, touch base in Holland’s capital.

The interior with bespoke presentation furniture fits perfectly with the company’s international and innovative character. It showcases a variety of design snuffs such as lighting in the shape of zebra crossings covered by a subway style block roster and window frames shaped like steel pillars like on a train platform.
TANK designed the custom made tables using wooden beams coated with epoxy (resembling railway ties) and industrial steel framing.
The whole space is executed in black, gray and white tones, giving a couple of interior elements the chance to really stand out. For example the world map in the main meeting room, where all DJ’s are ‘pinned’ to their current location, and the super green plants surrounding the entire office space. Special tanned barn wood covers one-third of the walls, completing the office with that homey touch.
