Northern light is an office building in the Huidekoperstraat in Amsterdam. The first two layers of the building are occupied by parking with a moderate entrance lobby, stairs and elevators. Less representative at ground level, the view and openness becomes extensive at the higher levels. TANK reshuffled the program moving the lobby to the top floor. The users and visitors now enter the building through an escalator directly from the facade to the lobby on the top. The signature lobby connects views of the city, daylight from the north, a open office landscape, board rooms, meeting spaces and the office restaurant, in a space of encounter and interaction. The users could start their day with a coffee from the lobby and then move to their workspace at other levels.
The zig-zag facade blocks direct sunlight from the south and the low east/west sun. Daylight is indirectly distributed by the surfaces in the facade. Views are uninterrupted towards the north creating an ideal view and daylight condition.
